Hidden Secret Garden

Medicinal plants offer a rich number of effects. Calming, digestive, antiinflammatory, wound-healing, antipyretic etc. The plants are a natural access to cure of a variety of symtoms and work on humans and our environments in complex ways.
Knowledge in use of plants as medicine has deep roots, both scientific and in folk pharmacy. The knowledge operates in many different levels. From everyday home medicine to ritual use to drug development in industrial pharmacy.
There is a lot of litterature published in the field of plant medicine. But much knowledge about growing, where and when to harvest, what parts of the plants are to be used and how to use the plant remedies has to be submitted and acquiered throught practice, relations and confidence.
This little garden for the Sunken Courtyard at the National Gallery of Canada consists of seven native plants with a variety of medicinal effects. They are planted, kept and mediated in collaboration with persons from the local community with interests in plant and their medicinal use.
